Romney vs Obama -
January 25, 2012

As the race for president heats up here in the United States, it is no surprise that people post images supporting their favorite candidate.

There is an image comparing Mitt Romney and President Obama that shows Romney having his shoes shined and looking very comfortable being pampered. Next to this is a photo of Obama fist-bumping a person who appears to be a maintenance worker at the White House.

The idea, of course, is that Mitt is rich and will place the wealthy above the lower classes if he should be elected, while Obama is a man of the people – the working class.

It should be interesting to see what other images pop up in the next year as election day draws ever closer.

Learning About Afterimage or Why Is This Woman So Negative? -
January 25, 2012

The image of a beautiful woman has been making the rounds in the social network sites. The most noticeable feature of this image is that it is a photographic negative.

Photographic negative used to demonstrate afterimage.

Viewers are asked to stare at the red star on the woman’s nose for 30 seconds and then look at away. You could also close your eyes.

After staring at the image for a period of time, the negative is temporarily “burned” onto your retinas. When you look at a light surface or close your eyes, you can see a color image of the woman for several seconds. This is known as an afterimage.

Darth Vader Lists Luke as Son on Facebook -
January 25, 2012

Speaking of Star War themed images popular on Facebook, here’s one depicting an unwanted family relation confirmation request. It seems Darth Vader has found his son on FB and wants Luke to confirm the relationship.

It seems Luke Skywalker would rather not confirm his father’s request, but can any of us really change our destiny?

Betty White Becomes a Jedi on Her 90th Birthday -
January 25, 2012

Betty White turned 90 recently, and there have been a few memes (especially graphics) appearing in the cloud to celebrate the event.

One of the more interesting graphics shows Betty wielding two light sabers, as her friends from “The Golden Girls” look on in the guise of deceased Jedi Masters.

While 90 isn’t 900, this does remind me of the other recent Star Wars related image with Yoda. All of us should look as good as Betty when we turn 90.

Shit People Say -
January 16, 2012

One of the biggest memes plowing through the social networks are “Shit (place a specific group here) Say” quotations. Many of these presentations take the form of videos.

Google search results for “Shit say” will bring up results like:

Funny Shit Girls Say
Shit New Age Girls Say
Shit Asian Dads Say
Shit Democrats Say
Shit Christians Say to Atheists
Shit Vegans Say
Shit Gay Men Say to Women
Shit Kids Say

As you can see, any group can be represented. From many of the comments given on each forum or video’s page, it seems that a large number of people agree that the quotes given for a particular group are spot on.

It can be argued that many of the quotations are generic and could be associated with many different groups. Does this matter to those who find entertainment in the meme? It seems not.

Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus -
January 13, 2012

A video of a young man reciting a poem he wrote about religion vs Jesus has been repeatedly seen on Facebook feeds the past few days. The man’s name is Rob Bell, and he explains in his verse how religion seems to cause more problems than it solves.

What Really Happened with the Mayan Calendar (2012) -
January 13, 2012

While most people seem to think it’s just a lark, the press, in its continual search for sensationalism, continues to remind everyone that the end of the world is coming this year. It seems the ancient Mayan calendar ends in December of 2012, so that could mean everything ends at that time.

One explanation for the calendar ending in 2012 has been offered in a cartoon that is making the rounds on the social networks. It seems the creator of the calendar simply ran out of room, and 2012 was as far as he could go.

Perhaps the world will not end this year. Although… we should live life as if it were.

The Number One Song from the Week You Were Born -
January 7, 2012

The big game on FB this week was to post a video from YouTube about the number one song during the week you were born.

The game:
1. Look up the #1 song from the week you were born.
2. Find the song on YouTube.
3. Post without shame.

My song was “My Heart HasĀ  a Mind of It’s Own” sung by Connie Francis.

To Which Hogwarts House Would You Belong -
January 7, 2012

This past week, a popular meme has come back to Facebook. Users can add an app that will tell them what Hogwarts house they would be placed in (should they ever go to the magic school).

This isn’t the first time this meme has been featured on the social network, but I suppose Harry Potter will be popular for some years to come.

Anyway, when I saw that one of my FB friends had been placed in Hufflepuff, I had to post a favorite Second City video of mine. Wasn’t a Hufflepuff a Pokemon?
